As of the end of March, Facebook will convert all business pages to the new timeline view. It represents a challenge as page owners have 30 days to figure out how to customize the new layout and create appropriate assets (most notably the large cover photo that dominates the initial landing screen. (It measures 850×315, for those of you seeking to create one for yourself.)
A summary of the changes:
- The landing page will be the timeline view for everyone, the ability to land people on a custom tab is gone.
- Profile banners are gone in favor of the cover photo.
- Page tabs to go to areas like company info, photos, videos, etc are more prominent in placement, but blend in more just under the cover photo.
- You can now “pin” a story to the top of your timeline, rather than having it fall down the list as time goes on. Facebook as also provided the ability to make the story wider on the timeline so it’s more prominent. This could be very useful to promote current offers or particularly important stories.
As with most changes Facebook makes, they’ll be met with a fair amount of resistance. In the end, this look is fresh and flexible – and a much better solution for businesses.
