Here is another in our ongoing series of things going on around Rochester. Enjoy!

With as many as 99.7% of Americans considering a great smile to be an essential asset in social situations, it’s no wonder that cosmetic dentistry and orthodontics are in demand. Now, for patients who would like to get braces but don’t want to show them off, a new program courtesy of an upstate New York orthodontist aims to better train others in the field in giving patients lingual braces.

Dr. Brandon Comella, of Rochester, NY, has created the first and only formal training program in North America for lingual braces. Lingual braces are made from metal, but they are different from traditional braces because they attach to the inside of a patient’s teeth, so they are invisible to others.

Dr. Comella’s Harmony Expert Program is a two-day training class in Rochester, and it was created in partnership with American Orthodontics, the maker of Harmony brand lingual braces. The Harmony Expert Program is made for orthodontists who want to expand their practice by offering lingual braces, and by the end, they will be trained in the hands-on application and mechanics of this orthodontic treatment.

In addition to hands-on training, the program will also give orthodontists support with marketing this treatment, along with pricing analysis and other information to help orthodontists begin offering these hidden braces to their patients.

The treatment is made for anyone with fully formed teeth, typically teens and adults. While prices of lingual braces can vary depending on dental practice and length of treatment, Oral-B estimates their average cost to be between $8,000 and $10,000 — among the most expensive of orthodontic treatments.

While other “invisible” braces treatments can only correct so many dental issues for a patient, Harmony’s lingual braces system claims to treat even the most severe cases by using unique computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing dentistry methods, according to the brand’s website.
